Interestingly enough, Hunt was inspired by the ellipse-shaped design on the helmet of the 49ers. The two settled on the name Kansas City Chiefs over other alternatives like the Stars, Mules, and Royals in tribute to Harold Roe Bartle, the then-mayor of Kansas, who was affectionately known as “The Chief” after having served as a Boy Scouts executive for many years.
